Neocallitropsis pancheriis a highly endangeredconiferous species in the cypress plant family (Cupressaceae). It is the only species in the genusNeocallitropsis. It is an alwaysgreen shrub that can also be woody. It is found in the wild only in New Caledonia.
The scientific name of the genus consists of the prefix neo-, which means new, as well as the name Callitropsis, which means "Callitris-like", which refers to closely related radiation cypresses(Callitris). The species namepancheripays homage to the French botanist Jean Pancher, who lived in the 1800s.
Neocallitropsis pancheriis a woody plant that is often shrub-like, but can also be woody. It usually grows to a height of 4 to 6 meters, but can sometimes reach ten meters in height. Stems can become 30 to 50 centimeters wide in diameter. On thicker stems, grayish bark flake off in narrow strips. Larger branches are shifting or healing, and their smaller branch branches tend to be over-sloping or erect. The canopy is often round or wide, but can also be conical. Leafy shoots are up to about 20 centimeters long and usually 5–10 millimeters wide. They grow densely near the tip of large branches.
The species is always green. The leaves grow radially in four-leaf curls. Each curl is turned 45 degrees from the previous one so that the leaves form eight rows around the spine. There are several types of leaves. Early leaves are typically narrow-lanceolate, pointed, about 8 to 14 millimeters long and less than a millimeter wide. Late leaves are often overlapping, only 4–5 millimeters long and about 2 millimeters wide. The plants also have transitional leaves, which are usually somewhere between early and late leaves in proportions. There are air gapson each surface of the leaves. On the underside, they form two clear air gap stripes.
The species is usually dioecious. The stamens are ending, 10–12 millimetres long and 6–7 millimetres wide. They consist of three or four spirals of four stamen leaves around the wrist. The stamen leaves are about 4–6 millimetres long and have a diamond-like shield-like shape. The stamen usually has 6-14 pollen-producing dust trays.
The pistil inflorescences, or cones, grow at the tip of a short branch branch and are up to about 1.5 centimetres long when the scales open. The pine cone scales consist of an overgrown actual pine cone scale and a covering scale. The cone consists of two boils of four pine cone scales. The scales open as the cone matures, releasing the seeds. Seeds usually develop only at the rate of 1 to 4 cones. They are 6–7 millimeters long and 2.5–3.5 millimeters wide, and have two or three wing wings.
