형태잎은 타원형이다. 꽃은 작고 꽃잎은 없으며, 연한 녹색을 띤다. 꽃받침은 열매가 성숙함에 따라 서로 엉켜 한 덩어리가 되어 구과를 형성한다. 한 구과 속에는 1∼5개의 종자가 들어 있어 다배 씨앗이 된다. 꽃받침 조각과 수술은 5개이고 암술은 1개인데 수술이 먼저 성숙한다. 뿌리의 당분 함량은 15∼20%이다. 1년째에는 뿌리가 굵어진다.분포일본, 독일, 프랑스, 네덜란드, 미국, 폴란드, 이탈리아 등생육환경서늘한 기후국가생물종지식정보시스템 > 식물자원 > 식물도감 > 이름으로찾기 (nature.go.kr)
