산지에서 자라는 낙엽 활엽 떨기나무로 키는 2~3m 정도이다. 묵은 가지는 짙은 갈색이며 햇가지는 회갈색이고 샘털이 있다. 잎은 어긋나며 타원형이고 길이 3~8cm, 너비 2~4cm로 가장자리에 작은 톱니가 있다. 꽃은 5~7월에 붉은빛이 도는 연한 황갈색 양성화가 피는데 총상꽃차례로 햇가지 끝에 5~15개씩 아래로 처져서 달린다. 꽃차례에는 잔털과 샘털이 있다. 꽃부리는 넓은 종형이며 길이 4~5mm, 끝이 5개로 얕게 갈라져 뒤로 젖혀진다. 수술은 10개다. 열매는 장과로 지름 4~5mm, 둥글며 9~10월에 흑자색으로 익는다. 우리나라 서해안 및 남부 지역에 나며, 세계적으로 일본, 중국 동부 등에 분포한다. 잎이 낙엽성이며 가장자리에 톱니가 없이 밋밋하고 억센 털이 많이 나는 점과 꽃이 새 가지 ..
