사초목 벼과에 속하는 관속식물이다. 낮은 산지의 건조한 풀숲에서 자라는 여러해살이풀이다. 뿌리줄기는 짧다. 줄기는 곧게 자라고 높이 70~100cm이다. 잎집에 퍼지는 털이 있다. 잎혀는 길이 1~3mm, 자른 활 모양이고 끝은 둥글며 짧은 털이 있다. 잎몸은 선형, 길이 30~40cm, 폭 3~6mm, 가장자리는 겉으로 말리고 뒷면은 분백색이다. 꽃은 8~10월에 피는데 원추꽃차례는 길이 20~40cm, 불염포에 싸여 있는 여러 개의 총상꽃차례가 어긋나게 달린다. 작은이삭은 4개의 자루가 있는 수꽃과 자루가 없는 1개의 양성꽃으로 되며, 밑부분에 털이 있으며 길이 3~5mm이다. 제1포영과 제2포영은 크기가 같으며 길이 8~10mm, 폭 3mm이다. 양성꽃의 외영은 길이 10mm, 까락은 비틀리며 길이..
