[Others]: Growth Form: Herbaceous rhizomatous perennial that occurs in dense clumps. Habitat: Occurs in wet tropical forests, along the margins or in forest openings. Stem: Stem is thick, round and herbaceous. Foliage: Alternate, sessile leaves are arranged in 2 rows on either side of the stem. Leaves lanceolate with acute apex and base (20 cm long, 3 - 5 cm wide) and wavy leaf margin. on either side of the midvein, green and white stripes of varying widths alternate with each other and are set at an angle to the midvein. Flowers: Flowers are tubular with lobes bent slightly backwards. They occur in terminal clusters (18 - 25 cm long). Fruits: Fruits are classified as capsules which are dry, dehiscent fruits. Landscaping: The variegated leaves provide interesting contrast to mostly green backgrounds. Consider planting it in semi-shady locations where the white-striped leaves and white flowers will help to brighten the area. It may be used as a shrub, although it is actually a perennial. It can be planted in mass or alone as a specimen planting. Cultivation: This species is fast-growing, so carefully control its spread. Plant in fertile, slightly acidic soil that has good drainage and is enriched with organic matter. Apply a thick layer of mulch and water well to keep the soil moist. It grows best in a humid atmosphere. Although this species grows well in the shade, leaves will lose their variegation and become more green in deep shade. Feed regularly with a granular palm fertilizer combined with additional supplements of potassium. Alternatively, you can feed with a 10-30-10 NPK fertilizer every 3 months. If leaves become yellow, apply a fertilizer containing minor elements every 3 month. Clumps that become too big should be divided. Plants are easy to transplant. Every few years, cut them down to allow new growth to emerge. This species is resistant to most pest and diseases. However, it is susceptible to thrips which can be controlled by applying malathion. Propagation: Propagate by rhizome division. Etymology: The genus "Alpinia" was named after Prospero Alpino, a botanist from Italy (1553-1616). The specific epithet "vittata" is derived from the Latin word "vittatus" which means banded, referring to the striped leaves.
