Curcuma alismatiffolia is an exotic plant that grows from rhizomes and a member of the large ginger family. Native to Thailand or Cambodia, Curcuma alismatifolia has gray-green foliage reaching three feet in height.

Some info on what is curcuma calls it a shrub. The plant has an upright habit and blooms on a scape rising above the foliage. Blossoms of the Siam tulip appear in late spring through fall, depending on the variety you’ve planted. These blooms range in shades of pink, red, rose and even brown. Tiny flowers also appear from the lower bracts, adding extra color to the Siam tulip plant.

Curcuma alismatiffolia Chaingmai pink

urcuma alismatifolia ‘Chiang Mai Pink’ is the original Siam Tulip or Tulip Ginger.  It was a superior clone found in the wild and brought back to Chaing Mai by a Buddist Monk as the story goes.  This one plant started an entire industry in Thailand and is why we now have dozens of varieties and hybrids on the market.  This new clone was taller and had a significantly larger bloom than typical wild forms.  It did not take long for people to realize an amazing cut flower and potted plant had been found.  Since then millions of this clone have been produced and sent around the world.  New forms were found and bred and hybrids were made with related species.   Still, the original is the standard by which all are judged and continues to be popular.

 

This cultivar prefers a very bright spot in well drained soil.  It is easiest to grow as a potted plant and stored indoors (dormant) over winter in Zone 8 and 9 even though  it is cold hardy there.  Newer hybrids and cultivars seem to adapt better to southern gardens but Chaing Mai Pink will do well if proper drainage and sunny conditions are given.

 

Foliage grows to 1 foot, blooms can reach 2′ + in height.  Prefers full sun, hardy in USDA Zone 8 and above
