Glabrous; stem short or none; leaves rosulate, to 20 or more, oblong-oblanceolate, obtusish, thick and turgid, shallowly concave above, rounded beneath, 5 to 7 cm. long or more, 15 mm. broad, epidermis lenticular-papillose; inflorescences two or more, sometimes as many as 12, lateral, spreading to ascending, to over 15 cm. tall, equilaterally racemose, but often branching near base, sometimes unilateral from one-sided lighting; peduncle slender, often decumbent at base; bracts numerous, readily detached and rooting, ascending, oblong-elliptic, acute, curved, to over 2 cm. long; racemes to 7 cm. long, with 6 to 10 or 20 flowers; pedicels slender, to 8 mm. long, bibracteolate; sepals subequal, longest to 6 mm. long, thick, subterete, lanceolate, acute, widely spreading at anthesis, very shortly connate at base, papillose as the leaves; corolla nearly straight, sharply pentagonal, to 10 mm. long, 6 mm. thick at base; petals thick, bluntly keeled, prominently hollowed at base; carpels slender; styles subulate; nectaries reniform, to 1.5 mm. wide. Flowers January and February. Description of living plants originally obtained from the University of California Botanical Garden, traceable to Dr. Rose.
Color. Leaves light cress-green tinged drab; bracts and sepals as the leaves; corolla salmon-orange above, to flesh-color at base, carmine at edges, buff-yellow inside; carpels pinkish vinaceous; styles maize-yellow; nectaries whitish.
Type. None designated. Lectotype: Saunders Refugium Botanicum, volume 3, plate 199, 1870.
Occurrence. Mexico. Veracruz: on rocks and trees in wet rainforest, at foot of easterly slopes of Mt. Orizaba.
Collections. Mexico. Veracruz: Barranca de Tenampa, C. A. Purpus in 1906 (NY); Zacuapan, Barranca de Consoquitla, C. A. Purpus in 1906 (UC). Cultivated: New York Bot. Gard., Purpus in 1907 (NY).
