A friend who doesn't garden and seldom notices what is growing outside, drove past a coastal garden displaying a mass of shocking pink king pelargoniums in full bloom and remarked that they were "the symbol of a good life”. Her words come back to us when we think of this plant. A passionate gardener was heard to complain that she had to pay "nearly fifty rands” for a new geranium hybrid that was covered in flowers. It's hard to decide if this is a king's ransom for these plants of humble origin that previously played a starring role in jam tins on the back verandas of many a grandmother. What we do know is that modern varieties of these ever-popular perennials appear every year. Admired for their compact growth habit, disease resistance, abundance of flowers and foliage in varying shades, and for this the plant breeders need to be compensated.Pelargonium grandiflorum, and the regal pelargoniums (king pelargoniums), are large, bushy perennials that grow upright with sharply serrated leaves. They produce large flowers in shades of white, soft pink, dark pink and purple. There are also many modern hybrids with lovely variegated flower faces that descend from Pelargonium cucullatum.
