Ravenala madagascariensis is a tree that grows as tall as 30–60 feet (9–18 m). The leaves are green, oblong, and have a broad margin pinnate with an evergreen venation of over 36 inches long. The flowers originating from the plant are white/cream/gray. R. madagascariensis is endemic to Madagascar. It is also widely found in parts of North America, as well as in many tropical and subtropical regions where it is cultivated mostly for its ornamental value. The plants' different parts hold a long-standing use against various disorders including diabetes, diarrhea, edema, hypertension, kidney stones, cough, stomachache, urinary retention, and mucous discharge. The plant is rich in anthraquinones, cardiac glycosides, cyanogenic glycosides, flavonoids, phlobatannins, saponins, steroids, tannins, terpenoids, and triterpenoids. R. madagascariensis has been shown to display good antidiabetic, antimicrobial, and antithrombotic potential in different assays conducted.
