Curcuma alismatifolia Siam Scarlet

 

This is one of the pure Curcuma alismatifolia cultivars of Tulip Gingers in the ‘Siam’ series.  The Siam Series was bred and owned K.P. Holland.  (Note: we had previously incorrectly listed Chaingmai University as the hybridizer).  These are bred for disease resistance, ease and quickness of growth and blooming habit.  The color range of the series is great and it seems that most are better performers than older varieties of Tulip Ginger.  With this species a well drained and sunny area is important.  Typically they are hit or miss in the landscapes throughout the south and not as reliable as the Tulip Ginger hybrids with Curcuma rhabdota.  That said we recommend them for pot culture as its very easy to store the pots dry over winter and this guarantees year after year of success.  Many people do have success with these in the landscape, and these newer varieties seem to come back better.   We recommend keeping a few in pots or lifting rhizomes over winter but leaving some in landscape to trial.

Curcuma alismatifolia ‘Siam Scarlet’ is one of several cultivars in the Siam Series of Tulip Gingers.  Most are pure Curcuma alismatifolia cultivars but a few are hybrids with the wonderful Curcuma rhabdota (Candy Cane Ginger).   ‘Siam Scarlet’ is a pure Curcuma alismatifolia and reminds one of the once common and popular Chaing Mai Red cultivar.  This newer cultivar has more vivid coloring and is a great addition to the sunny ginger garden.  Having the traditional Siam Tulip/Tulip Ginger look, the stems are long enough to make great cut flowers.  The scarlet colored blooms are held above the foliage.   Pure Curcuma alismatifolia cultivars need a sunny position and well drained soil.  Due to the overall small size of the plants they also make great pot plants for those with limited garden space.
