Description
Vernonia crinita, also called Vernone, is a large, slightly dishevelled perennial plant that works wonders in naturalist gardens or near watering holes. Its leafy stems, straight and robust, bear beautiful inflorescences in corymbs of a purple pink tending to purple from the second part of summer. Related to asters, reminiscent of eupatories, this North American species can withstand both harsh winters and scorching summers, provided that the soil that hosts it does not dry out completely.
Vernonia crinita belongs to the Asteraceae family. It is a majestic wild plant, native to North America, where it grows in more or less humid meadows and where it sometimes rises to a height of 3 m. In our country, in less favourable soil, this herbaceous perennial with a woody stump will not exceed 2 m in height and will occupy 50 cm on the ground. It grows quite quickly, but it takes two years to set in. It forms a clump of large and robust stems, straight and not very branched, bearing alternate, simple, narrow spearhead-shaped, dark green leaves. Flowering takes place from July-August to September-October, more or less early depending on the climate. Vernone produces an abundance of flowers, reminiscent of small ruffled pompoms, gathered in terminal corymbs at the end of the stems. This flowering turns to rust with age. The flowers all open at the same time, the bloom is long-lasting and attracts a large number of butterflies, for a magnificent spectacle. The aerial vegetation of the Vernonia is deciduous, it emerges from the ground in spring and dries out at the end of autumn.
