Vanilla edwallii is a species of orchid with a scandent habit and reptant growth that exists from Argentina to south-central Brazil. They are chlorophyll plants with aerial roots; crustous seeds, without wings; and inflorescences of pale-colored flowers that grow in succession, from lateral racemes.
This species can be recognized among the Vanilla by having comparatively slender stems, a clearly trilobed lip, ellipsoid, measuring up to 4 by 2 centimeters, with few raised lines on the disc; leaves slightly membranous and reticulate, oval; and flowers normally solitary in the leaf axils, comparatively smaller, but wide open, with narrow and acuminate segments; ovary more or less plump; and by its terrestrial habit, but climbing the trees, supported by its aerial roots.
