Origin and Habitat: South west USA (Texas) and Mexico
Altitude: 500-1500(-1900) m;
Habitat: The plants are very common on the plain, ridges and canyons on sandy to gravelly, over soils of sedimentary origin often calcareous in desert scrub, they spread by stolons to from impenetrable thickets where they monopolize the ground.

Description: Agave asperrimaSN|162]]SN|258]] is a medium to large species and one of the plants which the traveler first notices in the desert of Zacatecas. It is similar to Agave americanaSN|162]]SN|162]] but it is superior to the common century plant for garden use by virtue of its more rigid and stylized form.

Rosettes: Suckering 0,7-1 × 1,5-2 m wide.
Stem: Acaulescent or with very broad short stems.
Leaves: Few, narrowly oblanceolate and long-acuminate, rigid, spreading to recurved and mostly reflexed, glaucous bluish-green and rough (like sand-paper), without bud-prints, deeply channelled, usually less than 90 cm in length by 9 to18 cm wide, sharply armed with stout spines both terminal and lateral. Terminal spine lightly decurrent brown slender 4-9 cm long, Marginal spine 8-15 mm long 1 cm apart;
Inflorescence: Paniculate, not bulbiferous, similar to tha of Agave americanaSN|258]]SN|162]] but harly exceedling 4,5 m in height, bracts persistent, triangular, 3-10 cm long; lateral branches 8-14, slightly ascending, comprising distal 1/3 of inflorescence, longer than 10 cm.
Flowers: 14-18 per cluster, erect, 6-8 cm in diameter; perianth yellow, tube cylindric, limb lobes erect, subequal, 18-26 mm long; stamens exserted; filaments inserted just above mid perianth tube, erect, yellow, 5-6,5 cm long; anthers yellow, 24-30 mm tall; ovary 3-4 cm in diameter, neck constricted, 4–6 mm in diameter.
Blooming season: June through summer.
Fruits: 4-5 cm wide short-pedicellate oblong, capsules with beaked apexes.
Seeds: 6–7 mm.
