크기

높이 20~40cm이다.

잎

잎은 3~6개로 줄기에 어긋나기하며 엽병은 없다. 엽신은 거꿀달걀모양, 피침형, 혹은 넓은선형(길이 7~15cm, 너비 17~30mm)이며 밑부분은 좁아져서 엽초와 연결되고 끝은 뭉툭하며 잎 앞면에는 자색의 반점이 있다.

꽃

6월~8월에 줄기끝에서 총상꽃차례(길이 4~10cm)를 이루고 10여개의 붉은자색 꽃이 성글게 핀다. 포는 선상 피침형이며 끝은 뾰족하다. 길이는 꽃의 길이와 비슷하다. 외꽃덮이조각은 피침형 (길이 8~13mm)이며 끝은 날카롭게 뾰족하고 3개의 줄이 있다. 외화피의 윗 화피편은 곧추 서고 측 화피편은 옆으로 벌어진다. 내꽃덮이조각은 좁은 달걀모양이며 날카롭게 뾰족하고 외꽃덮이조각보다 좀 짧으며 2개의 줄이 있다. 입술모양꽃부리는 도란상 삼각형이며 외꽃덮이조각보다 좀 길며 안쪽에 붉은 자색의 무늬가 있고 털이 있으며 끝은 3갈래로 갈라진다. 입술모양꽃부리의 측편은 삼각형으로서 끝이 뭉툭하고 가운데 열편은 짧으며 끝은 뾰족하다. 거(길이 1~1.5cm)는 아래로 드리운다.

열매

삭과는 7~9월에 익는다.

줄기

줄기는 한대씩 나와 곧추 자라는데 세로로 능각이 있으며 밑부분에는 몇 개의 엽초 모양의 비늘 소엽이 있고 윗부분에는 가늘고 긴 엽초 모양의 잎이 있다.

2~3갈래로 갈라진 1~2개의 뿔모양 구근과 여러 개의 뿌리가 있다
