Description
Buddleja 'Miss Pearl' boasts crisp, clean, pure white, slightly ruffled flowers. Its semi-dwarf habit makes it a good choice as a landscape plant vs conventional varieties. 'Miss Pearl' blooms on new wood for months and will never be without dozens of honey-scented flowers. It has been bred for low fertility and is therefore non-invasive and allowed for import into states such as Oregon which restrict most Buddlejas. It will bloom the first year after planting and is easy to grow, tolerating different soil types (although clay soil benefits from adding compost). A sunny location and well-drained soil are necessary for best performance. Buddlejas do not tolerate poor drainage but are drought tolerant once established.
Deadheading is not necessary. It is attractive to pollinators but resists deer and rabbits. 'Miss Pearl' may die back to the ground in colder zones but will resume growth from the crown the following spring. In regions where above-ground shoots survive over winter, plants may require occasional moderate pruning in spring to maintain the desired compact shape.
'Miss Pearl' is a hybrid cultivar of Buddleja 'Miss Molly' and Buddleja 'Ice Chip' and was developed at North Carolina State University by Dr. Dennis Werner.
