Petroselinum is a genus of flowering plants in the family Apiaceae. The only two species are common in Europe. One species, parsley, is a medicinal and spice plant and is cultivated and naturalized as a well-known culinary herb mainly in temperate latitudes worldwide.

Appearance and leaves

The Petroselinum species rarely grow as annuals or mostly as biennial, herbaceous plants[1] with maximum heights between 75 centimetres and 100 centimetres.  The roots are narrowly conical. All parts of the plant are bare.  The strong, stem-round stems are erect and branch ascending or spreading in the upper part. 

The alternately arranged deciduous leaves on the stems are petiolate. The leaf blades, which are triangular in outline, are single to triplepinnate[3]. The uppermost section is ovate to linear with toothed or lobed margins. 

Inflorescences and flowers

The flowers are clustered together in a terminal or lateral, loosely compound, multi-rayed, double-sided inflorescence. There may be few bracts. There are some leaflets.  The hermaphroditic flowers are radially symmetrical and five-petaled with a double perianth. There are five tiny or none[3] sepals. The five white or yellowish, yellow or yellowish-green petals are obovate with a margined, narrow, inwardly curved upper end.  The stylopodium is low conical. The short stylus is spread out. 

Fruits

The more or less broadly ovate[2] or ovate-elongated[1], laterally slightly flattened, two-part split fruits, also called double achenes, are 2 to 4 millimeters in size and have five distinct, raised, thin main ribs and individually arranged oil passages.
