Vegetative features

Physalis cinerascensis a perennial plant that springs from a vigorous rhizome deep underground. The stems are 5 to 50 cm high and erect, the lower branches usually run spreading along the ground and are ascending. The shoot axis and the leaves are sparsely to densely covered with branched trichomes, which are 1 mm long or shorter.

The petioles are about 1/5 as long as the leaf blade, which is circular, ovate or spatula-shaped, 1.5 to 8 (rarely to 9) cm long and 1 to 6 (rarely to 8) cm wide. Towards the front, the leaves are pointed or blunted, the leaf margin is coarsely toothed, curved, wavy or full-margined. The leaf base is cut off to tapered.

Flowers

The flowers stand on flower stems, which are 10 to 33 mm long. The calyx is 5 to 9 (rarely 3.5 to 11) mm long and covered with 1.5 to 4.5 mm long tips. The hairs are sparse to dense and consist of branched trichomes that are 1 mm long or shorter. The crown is (rarely only 7) 9 to 16 mm long and clearly marked in the throat with dark purple-black spots. The spots are occasionally divided in two by the main yellow vein of the petals. The anthers are 2 to 5 mm long and twice as wide as the stamens.

Fruits

The fruits are orange colored berries. The stem lengthens at the fruit to 15 to 60 mm. The calyx increases to a length of 1.5 to 3.5 (rarely to 4.5) cm and a diameter of 1 to 3.5 cm. It is also green when the fruit is ripe.
