Stem: erect, glabrous to hairy. 

Leaf: 1--15 cm, 1--2 cm wide, lower oblanceolate to elliptic, crenate to pinnate-lobed, upper lanceolate to elliptic, toothed. 

Inflorescence: bracts 0 or linear to lanceolate, generally entire, green. 

Flower: sepals 6--12 mm; petals 12--20 mm, 4--6 mm wide, yellow, tip obtuse to round; stamens 3--17 mm, filaments of 5 outermost 10--20 mm, 3--6 mm wide, spoon-shaped, tip round, generally without anthers; style 8--13 mm. Fruit: erect, 10--18 mm, 7--10 mm wide, cylindric to occasionally cup-shaped. 

Seed: 3--4 mm, 2.5--3.5 mm wide, lenticular, winged, +- white.
Ecology: Sandy flats, creosote-bush scrub; 

Elevation: < 800 m. Bioregional Distribution: D; 

Distribution Outside California: Arizona, northern Mexico. 

Flowering Time: Mar--Jun
