ex Arn. A bushy perennial 12-30cm high, with varied mixtures of brittle spiny hairs, bristles and glochids covering all its vegetative parts sometimes imparting a whitish effect. Leaves petiolate, somewhat rhomboid to ovate-oblong in outline, acute at the tip and wedge-shaped at the base with large, irregular teeth, 4-7 by 2-4cm Flowering stems leafy, bearing twin-branched, one to three flowered cymes from the axils of the upper leaves. Flowers elegantly inverted, white, 2.8-3.5cm wide on slender, arched pedicels, midsummer to early autumn. Chile, in the central cordillera on dry stony slopes, hot screes and low mountain steppe scrublands at 1200-2000m. Of all the species described here, this is the most likely to inflict some unpleasant effect from its battery of defensive hairs. It is variable in size and can form a substantial specimen.
