The distinct smooth bark is strongly aromatic and peels in large papery sheets revealing a bright green fresh layer underneath. Leaves imparipinnate with 3 - 4 pairs of leaflets and a terminal leaflet. Leaflets oblong to obovate, finely velvety, particularly below; margins scalloped or toothed. Flowers in axillary compact heads, small, yellow, produced with the new leaves. Fruit, fleshy, elliptic, green, splitting to reveal a yellow or red pseudo-aril. Notes: Derivation of specific name: marlothii: named after H.W.R. Marloth (1855-1931) South African pharmacist and botanist. Habitat: In woodland but always associated with rocky kopjes. Altitude range: (metres) 500 - 1550 m Flowering time: Oct - Nov Worldwide distribution: Northern Botswana, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Mozambique and Mpumalanga, South Africa.
