Catophractes alexandri is a species of flowering plant in the Bignoniaceae family. It is found in subtropical southern Africa.

Catophractes alexandri is a shrub or small tree with spiked trunks and a hairiness of dense, gray, woolly trichomes. The leaves are opposite or often in clusters; They are simple, sedentary and notched.

Generative features

The lateral or terminal, grape-like inflorescences contain bracts and few flowers.

The hermaphroditic flowers are zygomorphic and five-petaled with a double flower envelope. The calyx is tubular and slightly carved on one side and covered with five (rarely six) thread-like tips. The crown is white, bell-shaped and slightly two-lipped from five (or rarely six or seven) spread lobes. The five (rarely six or seven) stamens have hairless anthers protruding beyond the crown, whose counters fuse in the upper area, but are free-standing and parallel in the lower area. The ovary is elongated and contains only a few seeds. It is surrounded by a cup-shaped flower base.

On the elliptical capsule fruits, flattened parallel to the septum, the calyx may still be present. The flaps of the capsule fruit are thick, woody and warty. The edge of the flat seeds is surrounded by a papery wing.

Catophractes alexandri is distributed in subtropical, southern Africa. It is found in Angola, Namibia, Botswana and South Africa.
