Properties
- Hybrid genus of Sasa and Phyllostachys
- only one species (Hibanobambusa tranquillans)
- fast-growing and robust plant
- Rhizomes spread strongly
- does not necessarily die after flowering
Known in Japan as Shiroshima, Hibanobambusa is a bred emergency hogenus with only one species. Hibanobambusa tranquillans is the only representative of this hybrid genus. The genus occurs exclusively in the south of the Honshu Province of Japan and is probably a hybrid of the genera Phyllostachys and Sasa.
In The Honshu Province, two bamboo varieties are particularly common: Phyllostachys nigra 'Henonis' and Sasa veitchii 'Tyugokensis' bloom in this region in some years at the same time, so crossing these two species is the most likely cause of the emergence of Hibanobambusa. The special position of the genus can be found in science characterized by a coloring mark. Therefore, x Hibanobambusa is the correct name of the hybrid genus in biology. The dwarf bamboo, also known as Phyllosasa, belongs from a botanical point of view to the family of sweet grasses (bot. Poaceae). Hibanobambusa also withstands temperatures of minus 20 degrees Celsius over several weeks and thrives splendidly in Central European climate.Leaf
The green and whitish-yellow panashed leaves reach a length of 20 to 25 centimeters and four to five centimeters wide. They grow on short, green stems that go directly from the stalk. On the petiole, between six and twelve brownish bristles go off the stem.
Flower
Most bamboo varieties bloom only in particularly dry phases or after extremely heavy rainfall. After flowering, the plants die and serve as a nutrient for the released seeds. Hibanobambusa can bloom several times, similar to species of the genus Phyllostachys.
Fruit
Depending on the location, Hibanobambusa plants rarely to regularly form fine grass seeds, which quickly grow into the first rhizomes in the soil.
Growth
The plant genus forms fast-growing foothills, from which the bamboo stalks grow upright in height. In Central Europe, Hibanobambusa grows over 2.5 meters high - under favorable circumstances, the bushy stalks reach up to five meters in height.
Hibanobambusa, like all sweet grasses, is vital and stable. Path slabs, bed boundaries and basement walls do not stop the resistant rhizomes. Ceramic flower pots also blow up the plants in growth phases. That's why gardeners regularly sting off sprouting rhizomes with a spade.Location
Decorative bamboo grasses of the genus Hibanobambusa thrive on loamy and sandy soil in a sunny to semi-shady location.
