Columbines are now available in a wide range of colours and plant heights. The Winky series produces loads of upfacing blooms held just above a bushy, compact mound of lacy leaves. This strain has rose pink outer petals, with a double centre or corolla in a blend of pink and white. Gorgeous in a perennial border or in a partly shaded woodland. Either allow plants to self-seed or cut back hard right after blooming. Columbines are not long-lived plants, so seedlings will provide future generations, although the colours usually differ from the mother plant.

Aquilegia ‘Winky Double Rose-White’ is one of several varieties in the Winky series, valued for their mildew resistance and upward-facing blooms. This compact variety bears fully double flowerheads that start out a fresh green and mature to pale pink and white. Unlike many aquilegias, ‘Winky Double Rose-White’ comes true from seed.

Grow Aquilegia ‘Winky Double Rose-White’ in fertile, moist but well-drained soil in sun to partial shade. Lift and divide clumps every three to five years and mulch annually with well-rotted manure or compost. Aquilegias are prone to self-seeding around the garden.
