Salvia 'Big Blue' is a hybrid sage, in reality a chilly perennial plant that will be easily grown as an annual for the generosity and beauty of its flowering. This heat-resistant variety produces from summer to frosts of superb spikes of erect, very dense, intense purplish-blue flowers, which rise majestically above a wide dark green foliage. With an erect but compact port of very neat appearance, this sage is wonderfully suited to flowering pots, borders, summer massifs. It is also a very beautiful flower to cut.
Salvia 'Big Blue' is a sterile horticultural hybrid, probably resulting from the spontaneous crossing of a Salvia longispicata, a large shrubby perennial native to the mountainous areas of southwestern Mexico, and Salvia farinacea, another perennial species native to Texas and Mexico. Just like its presumed relatives, this plant belongs to the lamiaceae family. Its low hardiness and rapid growth make it an excellent annual in most of our climates. The cultivar 'Big Blue', has an elegant port, both erect and bushy, reaching about 50 cm in height in bloom and 40 cm in diameter. It forms bunches of solid stems, covered towards their base with a wide oval foliage, with toothed edges and apparent veins, of dark green color, very different from that of floury sages. Flowering starts timidly in July, takes off in August-September, reaching its peak in October-November. Above the tuft formed by the foliage appear erect and dense spikes, 30 cm long, garnished with small flowers of a sustained blue-purplish. Since the plant does not produce viable seeds, it devotes all its energy to flowering tirelessly, until the cold brings it down.
