Selaginella martensii, offered under the name Marten's Moss Herb, differs from the other moss herbs in residential culture especially by its growth form. The shoots up to about 30 cm long are not so richly branched. The shoots grow about half upright and then tilt downwards. These shoots are supported by strong, stiff roots that grow down from the leaf joints in the lower part of the shoots into the pottery. The slightly fleshy, shiny green colored leaves become about 12 mm long.

Selaginella martensii " Variegata" is equal in growth, but forms silvery-white leaf tips.
