형태낙엽활엽교목이며, 수형은 원정형이다.(가지는 분산형으로 신장). 뿌리는 천근성(淺根性)이지만, 넓게 신장하기 때문에 지지력과 활착이 좋다. 높이는 30m, 지름 1m 정도로 자란다(우리 나라에서는 가장 크게 자라는 나무이다). 나무껍질은 백색 또는 갈백색이 돌며 종이장처럼 벗겨진다. 가지는 지점(脂點)이 없고 갈색이고 일년생가지에 털이 있으나 점차 없어지며 껍질눈은 옆으로 길어지고 선형(線形)이다. 잎은 어긋나기로 난상 타원형, 긴 달걀상 타원형 또는 긴 달걀 모양이며 길이 5~8㎝, 폭 2~2.8㎝로서 끝이 좁고 길게 뾰족해지며 원저 또는 아심장저이고 가장자리에 겹톱니가 있으며 표면은 털이 없거나 있고 뒷면은 선점이 있으며 맥 위에 털이 있고 측맥은 10~16쌍이다. 잎자루는 길이 8~15㎜이다. ..
