Pinus strobus 'Tiny Kurls' / Tiny Kurls eastern white pine

A dwarf selection of the ever-popular, but large-growing Torulosa — a great selection for small gardens.

Pinus strobus 'Tiny Kurls' is a dwarf selection of eastern white pine that has nice globose structure when young, later becoming broadly pyramidal. Needles are twisted and Blue-green in color, a very desirable feature. After 10 years of growth, a mature specimen will measure 5 feet (1.5 m) tall and 4 feet (1 m) wide, an annual growth rate of 4 to 6 inches (10 - 15 cm).

'Tiny Kurls' was one of three seedling selections made in the mid-2000s by Vermont's Greg Williams, the other two being 'Mini Twists' (the slowest growing of the three), and 'Vercurve' (the fastest). All were raised from seed sourced from his specimen of Pinus strobus ‘Horsham,’ which was planted in the vicinity of a large Pinus strobus ‘Torulosa,’ the apparent pollen parent. Dianne Fincham of Coenosium gardens named the plant and introduced it to the nursery trade.
