Powerful fragrance in a small package: Encyclia radiata’s scent is considered one of the most delicious of all orchids. Look carefully at the small flowers (the plant stands just 9 inches tall)—the lip is upside down, and at the top of the flower, find a characteristic that gives orchids like this the nickname “cockle shells.”

This orchid will produce several new growths in a season and can be grown on into a large specimen. But it also looks charming on a windowsill, and you can easily keep it at the desired size by dividing it every few years. It flowers profusely during the summer, bearing delightful creamy-white, highly scented blooms. The flowers open with their lip held at the top, which is different than most orchids. This species, which comes from Mexico, makes slender pseudobulbs with a pair of narrow mid-green laves. The flowers, six or eight to a spike, will last for five to six weeks.
