Brunfelsia latifolia Benth.Brunfelsia latifolia is a 0.2 to 1 m high shrub with strongly branched growth. The branches spring close to the base, are often zigzag-like shaped and covered with leaves. The bark is thin, light brown to greyish. The young branches are light brown, the distance between the internodes is about 1 cm.

The leaves vary greatly in their shape, they are almost sessile, the petiole is only 1 to 4 mm long, glabrous and dark purple colored. The leaf blade is 4 to 9 cm long and 2.2 to 5.5 cm wide, elliptic to oblong or ovate to reverse ovate. To the front, the leaf is pointed, blunted or rounded, occasionally provided with a small tip or bulged. The leaf base is dull to wedge-shaped, rarely cut. The top of the leaf is dull or shiny dark green, the underside is dull and light green. Occasionally there are some fine trichomes along the midrib. on each side of the leaf, five to eight side veins extend from the midrib, most of which are straight.

‘Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow’ (Brunfelsia latifolia)

So called because over three days its fragrant flowers open deep purple, fade to lilac with a white ‘eye’, then soften to white. This evergreen shrub can grow almost three metres high but the “Sweet Petite” variety is a compact one metre.

    Brunfelsia pauciflora 'Macrantha'

Brunfelsia pauciflora 'Macrantha' (Royal Purple Brunfelsia) - A sprawling evergreen shrub to 3-4 feet tall and as wide. In spring, and often repeating in fall appear the 2-4 inches wide deep lavender flowers with white centers and wavy-edged petals. A very attractive plant for well-watered lightly-shaded areas in the garden. This robust variety has large leaves to 8 inches long by 2 1/2 inches wide and larger flowers than typical Brunfelsia giving it a somewhat tropical appearance. It is also more tender to frost, not as upright in habit and has been noted to have much higher fertilizer requirements than other Brunfelsia. Southern California gardeners have recommended regularly feeding this plant from late December through the bloom period with an ample amount of a well-balanced (20-20-20) fertilizer. Plant in a well-drained soil with light shade and irrigate regularly. Hardy to about 30-32 degrees F although it can sprout back from the ground after temperatures in the mid 20s . Prune in winter or after spring bloom to keep plants fuller. Makes a great large container plant.  The information on this page is based on research conducted in our nursery library and from online sources as well as from observations made of this plant as it grows in our nursery, in the nursery's garden and in other gardens that we have observed it in. We also will incorporate comments received from others and always appreciate getting feedback of any kind from those who have additional information, particularly if this information is contrary to what we have written or includes additional cultural tips that might aid others in growing Brunfelsia pauc. 'Macrantha'.

    Brunfelsia pauciflora 'Floribunda'

Brunfelsia pauciflora ‘Floribunda’ is a dense shrub that grows to about 2 to 3 m tall.

The leaves are elliptical and leathery with a waxy sheen. The flowers, in shades of dark blue, lilac and white, can change colour daily and cover the plant in a spectacular display during early spring. More flowering stages follow during summer.

October in the garden means soft shades of flowers and romantic sweet scents, and brunfelsia encapsulates all this in one good shrub: it covers itself in sweet-smelling flowers in shades of deep purple, lilac and pale white. It is these three shades of flowers carried simultaneously that led to its common name ‘Yesterday, today and tomorrow’.

Take advantage of all its lovely attributes and plant one of these slow-growing, large shrubs in a flowerbed near your bedroom window or in a big pot on your verandah. Remember this wise admonition from a fellow gardener when, on one dull winter’s day, we stood in front of an early blooming brunfelsia and moaned about inconsequential things: “Don’t think about yesterday; it will make you cry. Don’t think about tomorrow; it will make you worry. Live for and think of today; it will make you laugh!” This plant in bloom is enough to make one laugh in sheer delight.

    Brunfelsia pauciflora Benth.

This species is a shrub up to 2.4 meters tall by 1.5 wide whose bark is greyish brown and mostly smooth and only occasionally interrupted by longitudinal cracks. The sparsely existing branches stand upright to spread. The dark green, smooth branches are strong and glabrous, rarely covered with fluff-haired or glandular trichomes.

The leathery leaves are up to 16 centimeters long, dark green on top and paler on the undersides. The leaves are distributed on the branches or as a group at the branch tips. The hairless petioles have a length of 5 to 12 mm. The firmly membranous to almost leathery leaf blade is 6.5 to 16 cm long and 2 to 6.5 cm wide, elongated to elongate-lanceolate, rarely elliptic-oblong to ovate-elongated. The tip is pointed to short pointed, rarely blunted to notched. The base of the leaf blade is wedge-shaped to tapered. The leaf surface is glabrous or dotted on the underside of the midrib or slightly glandular hairy. The top is dark green, dull to shiny, the underside is light green. From the midrib go five to eleven side veins that run straight or in a wide arc.

The four stamens set in the upper part of the floral tube, the white stamens are almost circular, somewhat trough-shaped in the direction of the dust bag. The upper pair of stamens has 4 to 6 mm long stamens, the lower stamens are 2 to 4 mm long. The greenish-brown anthers are 1.5 to 2 mm long and circular to kidney-shaped. The bright green ovary is 2 to 3 mm high and has a diameter of 1.5 mm, it is conical-ovate shaped. The thread-like stylus has a length of 25 to 30 mm and is coloured lavender. The scar is bilobed, white, 1 mm long, the scar lobes are slightly different in size.
