Pink turtlehead is a native perennial widflower, cultivated widely and introduced in New England, where it grows outside its native range. In our region, it persists in wet soils such as along streams, and sometimes around houses, in Connecticut, Massachusetts and Maine. This "turtlehead" gets its name from its hooded flowers, which are shaped like turtle heads just emerging from the shell

Chelone lyonii was described by Frederick Traugott Pursh in 1813. The name is considered as validly published.

Chelone lyonii is a species in the genus Chelone which contains approximately 7 to 32 species and belongs to the family of the Scrophulariaceae (Figwort Family). The type species of the genus is Chelone glabra.

Growth :The perennials have an upright growth and reach heights of 80 to 120 centimetres.

Leaves :Chelone lyonii has dark-green, simple leaves that are opposite. The leaves are ovate, dentate and petiolate.

Flowers and Fruits :Chelone lyonii produces spikes of light purple tubular flowers from July to September.

The perennials produce septicidal capsules.
