Rhododendron 'Point Defiance'

Broadleaf evergreen shrub, 6 ft (1.8 m), vigorous.  Leaves alternate, simple, large, about 18 cm long, dark matte green above, ligher below.  Flowers of "heavy substance", 11 cm wide, pink then white, edged in red-pink on all lobes, without a blotch, compact cluster of 17 flowers.

-5°F, mid, flower quality 5/4-5/4-5 [flower / plant & foliage / performance; scale 1 (poor) - 5 (best)]. Sun or moderate shade.

The clone is from Halfdan Lem's Walloper group (including 'Pink Wallower [syn. Lem's Monarch] and 'Red Walloper')(Greer, 1996).

Rhododendron 'Hortinno XXL'

This Rhododendron is a new hybrid species which was obtained through more than 10 years of intensive breeding. The objective of the breeding process is to obtain a plant which will not only yield a beautiful flower, but which also has a fine appearance as a potted rhododendron, has an extended flowering period and moreover is readily grown. This newest variety is easily distinguished by a strikingly large raceme and an extended flowering period.

 

These lush and large flowers will enhance horticultural value for any garden and plant lover. The Rhododendron also features compact growth, which makes this plant suited even for smaller gardens and for use as a potted rhododendron. Its lush inflorescence adorns even terraces, balconies or city gardens.

This rhododendron has variegated (two-coloured) flowers. The unicoloured bud (still unopened flower) is of an intense carmine red. Flowers then open to display two colours: a carmine red edge with a nicely contrasting white flower heart.
