H. cooperi var. pilifera is characteristic by its bluish-green colour, shorter and more stumpy leaves (than var. cooperi), with less pronounced marginal spines, leaf end mostly with bristle. It is slowly offsetting species. Size of the rosette can be from 4 cm - 12 cm. They often grow close to the soil and in dry period they becomes very cryptic, only with leave tips visible above the ground. This variety constitutes the main bod of cooperi species.

 

H. cooperi var. pilifera is species from dry grassveld areas in Eastern Cape. It occurs from Uitenhage-Port Elizabeth area in the West to Kingwilliamstown in the East. In Port Elizabeth area plants are smaller, with longer leaves and more sharp leave end. Breuer and Hayashi use name 'salina' for this smaller form. The largest elements grow around Somerset East, where this variety continuously changes into var. dielsiana. Close to Chalumna River was found attractive population of plants with much longer translucent leaves and was described as H. cooperi var. davidii. This species is well known in cultivation for many years, it has many "synonyms". Some forms are very attractive and can be jewels of any collection. Propagation by seed or offsets. It doesn´t have any special needs.
