Distribution:

 

Habitat: on forest ground in shady and wet places or along stream sides; alt. 1000–2600 m.

 

Distribution: China, Japan, Korea, India, and Russia.

general taxon notes:

This species is similar to Mnium carolinianum Anders. in general habit, leaf shapes and margins, and in having a row of enlarged cells in juxtacostael regions. Anderson (1954) stated that Mnium carolinianum is characterized by its concave leaf apices, thick-walled marginal leaf cells (2–3 rows of smaller cells), and decurrent leaf bases. These features are also found in Plagiomnium maximoviczii. We consider these to be sister species between East Asia and North America. Perhaps, they are one species with disjunctive distribution.

 

This species is also a host species of gall aphis, Schlechtendalia chinensis Bell. It is one of the main host species among eleven Mniaceae species.
