A slightly hairy annual with erect or ascending, branched stems to 30 cm long. Lower leaves oblanceolate, on short stalks;  upper leaves oblong or elliptical,  sessile,  clasping the stem;  leaves finely toothed.   Flower heads from 1 to 3 cm across,  bright yellow to orange. Ray florets about 1 cm long, less than twice the length of the involucre; disc florets 2.5 to 4 mm long. Involucre about 8 mm long; bracts in one row, often reddish on the upper parts. Achenes of three forms: the outer ones long and pointed, strongly curved, smooth or with spiny wings; the middle ones boat-shaped; the inner ones ring-shaped.
