This superb variegated grass was first cultivated fifty years ago in Japan. It is almost evergreen with us, although it needs cutting to the ground in mid winter to keep it looking clean, and makes 2 metres tall foliage fountains. The copper-red flower feathers, held well above the leaves, are produced in late summer and autumn.

Cosmopolitan Silvergrass, Eulalia, Japanese Silvergrass

What a big, bold beautiful plant! Cosmopolitan silvergrass originates from Japan and eastern Asia and has long, broad blades of dark green lined with stripes of white. Late in the season, plants produce many tall, upright stems topped with feathery, copper-hued plumes that soften and curl as they dry. These remain attractive throughout winter.

Japanese silvergrass prefers full sun and tolerates a wide range of moderately drained soils. This variety is even tolerant of poorly drained soils. Plants form substantial clumps that should be cut to the ground in the spring and divided every three years. They also self sow and have been known to be somewhat invasive.

Enjoy this substantial grass as a screen or in large borders as an accent plant.
