Asian Cymbidiums or Chinese Cymbidiums refer to mainly five species of cymbidiums orchids that are found throughout East Asia in areas of China, Korea, Japan, India, and in parts of Thailand and Vietnam. These species are usually grown for their variegated leaves. But plants are also grown for their fragrant flowers and peloric flower structure. Plants are usually grown in long and thin vase like pots. The five species are:
- Cymbidium sinense
- Cymbidium ensifolium
- Cymbidium kanran
- Cymbidium goeringii (all the varieties like v. longibracteatum, v. lianpan, subsp. gracillimum are treated as different groups in the culture traditionally) Image
- Cymbidium faberi
These plants are much more manageable in size than the "Classic Hybrids", and are much more free-blooming. They will often come into spike several times per year, without much prompting. They also often have a delightful, light fragrance.Their flower size is reduced, but is still much larger than the species. The plants are also more tolerant of cooler temps and higher light than their species parent, but this is certainly not a necessity for their proper culture. Their foliage also tends to retain the attractive characteristics of the species parent.
For their culture, follow the guidelines of the species parent for good results.

Easy to grow, and very easy to bloom. Some good examples are
- Peter Pan (ensifolium x Miretta)
- Maureen Carter (sinense x Sleeping Beauty)
- Golden Elf (ensifolium x Enid Haupt)
http://www.cloudsorchids.com/ccym.htmCymbidium /sɪmˈbɪdiəm/, or boat orchid, is a genus of 52 evergreen species in the orchid family Orchidaceae. The new Latin genus name is derived from the Latin cymba meaning boat. Its first known use was in 1815.Cymbidium tracyanum
The most spectacular and fragrant of the Cymbidium species. In its native habitats of Myanmar, Thailand, and China this plant grows up in the trees with its inflorescense arching to cascading down. In cultivation, it does fine potted as with other cymbidiums. All tracyanums are not equal. Many are poor bloomers with short flower spikes. The varieties offered here are selected for their good blooming history, tall spikes, and good color.Cool growing. Fall blooming.
