General Description

Tiny and exquisitely beautiful, ‘Pink Lusitanica’ is a perfect problem solver for small spaces and perennial container compositions. It is a hybrid of the species, Armeria maritima, native to the shores of the Mediterranean extending eastward into Turkey. Its species name refers to a preference for coastal or maritime climates. It grows as mounded tuft in the rapid drainage and full sun at the edge of a bluff. The leaves are stiff, narrow and dark, rising into a delightful, tidy dome.

This hybrid sea thrift blooms in spring. Small round pompon-shaped fuzzy flowers are borne in various shades of magenta pink on the same plants. They sit atop straight thin stems in great quantity nearly obscuring the plant at the peak of bloom. Deadhead spent flowers to prolong bloom into summer.

Give ‘Pink Lusitanica’ good drainage and modest moisture. In wet conditions, it will rot. Tolerant of alkalinity, it thrives on limestone soils. Grow it in containers with good drainage, or any location with elevated sloping ground too poor for other perennials. The leaves may get weatherbeaten over the year. Cut them back annually to renew the clump.
