아메리카 대륙과 서인도 제도의 따뜻한 지역이 원산지이며 흔히 화단의 가장자리와 온실에 관상용으로 심는다. 키가 45㎝ 정도 되는 줄기가 여러 개 나오며, 그 끝에 자주색 반점이 있는 흰꽃이 무리지어 핀다. 입술 모양의 꽃잎 2개가 관(管) 모양을 이루며 이 꽃을 잎처럼 생긴 수많은 적갈색 포(苞)가 둘러싸고 있어 전체 모양과 색깔이 새우를 닮았다. 흔히 심는 원예품종들로는 폴스 홉(false hop), 슈림프 부시(shrimp bush), 멕시칸 슈림프 플랜트(Mexican shrimp plant)가 있다. 한국에서도 외국에서 들여온 새우풀을 온실에 심고 있다. 이와 비슷한 식물로 같은 과에 속하는 쥐꼬리망초(Justicia procumbens)가 있는데, 남부지방에서 자라며, 7~9월에 연한 자홍색의 꽃이 수상(穗狀)꽃차례를 이루어 핀다.
There are around 600 species of Justicia distributed across the tropics and into the warmer parts of North America. Many are grown as ornamentals in tropical and subtropical gardens and as conservatory plants in temperate areas. The genus was named for James Justice (1698-1763), a passionate, though somewhat eccentric, Scottish horticulturist and writer.
