Common name: Cafecillo, Zorillo Colorado,

Distribution: From Mexico to Panama. In Costa Rica it is distributed between 600-2450 meters above sea level in very humid, rain, cloud and oak forest, primary and secondary forests, forest edges and ravine banks. Present on both slopes of: Tilarán, Central and Talamanca mountain ranges. Pacific slope and near the continental divide in: Guanacaste Mountain Range, Aguacate Mountains, Escazú Hills, Turrubares and Caraigres Hills, Coastal Line, Central Valley, Puriscal, Rio Grande de Candelaria basin, General Valley (1).

Description: Shrub or tree 1–10 m long. Leaves simple, opposite, 10–15 × 3–5 cm, stipules with well-developed sheath, narrowly thin lobes and truncated sinus. Very striking orange-red inflorescences in the shape of a pyramid. Flowers with yellow corolla. Black-purple or black fruits 4–6 × 4–6 mm (1).

Propagation Method: Seeds, stakes, seedlings.

Resources available for birds: Floral nectar and fruits.

Bird families observed visiting their flowers: Trochilidae, Thraupidae (Diglossa plumbea)

Families of birds observed feeding on its fruits: Passerelidae, Thraupidae, Turdidae, Tyrannidae.

Notes: Flores are also visited by butterflies and native bees.
