The mamojuaxtle (Clethra mexicana) is a tree in the family Clethraceae.
Description
It is evergreen and can reach up to 25 m high or often only 8 to 15 m.
Distribution and habitat
It is endemic to the Central American region and Mexico. It lives in mixed pine-oak forests and mountain mesophiles. It often occupies forest clearings and disturbed environments. It is distributed along the Transverse Volcanic Axis and some adjacent mountains, from Michoacán to Puebla. It is distributed as far as Panama.
The IUCN Red List has it in the category of least concern (LC).
Common names
Only for the region of Chiapas the following common names have been registered: aguacatillo, jaboncillo, mamey cimarrón. Other known common names for the species: amajuastle, cuchara, madroño, mamahuaxtle, quilaguacate, tlecúhuitl, and totonalcanácat.
