Marathrum foeniculaceum Bonpl. in Humb. & Bonpl., Pl. Aequinoct. 1: 40. 1806; M. minutiflorum Engl. M. oxycarpum Tul.; M. schiedeanum (Cham.) Tul. Hierbas hasta 50 cm de largo, unidas al substrato por una base irregular de hasta 60 cm de largo y 2 cm de ancho. Hojas repetidamente pinnadas, hasta 50 cm de largo, divisiones últimas casi filiformes to espatuladas, 0.5–4.5 mm de largo; pecíolos hasta 13 cm de largo; estípulas 1–3 mm de largo. Flores solitarias o fasciculadas; pedicelo 1–9 cm de largo, ensanchado to cuculiforme en el ápice or neither; tépalos 5–10, en un verticilo, 0.5—1.5 mm de largo; estambres 5–10, 3.5–6 mm de largo; ovario 2--5.5 mm de largo y 1–3 mm de diámetro, con 8 costillas. Cápsula 2.5—5.5 mm de largo, cada valva con 5 or 6 costillas prominentes. Localmente abundante en corrientes de aguas poco profundas, en Chontales, Jinotega, Matagalpa y Zelaya; 0–975 m; fl y fr ene–may; Haynes 8367, Stevens 22857; Mexico a Colombia and Ecuador.
Medium-sized herb; base irregular, 0.5-2.0 cm. long, 1.0-1.5 cm. wide. Leaves 2.5-35.0 cm. long, repeatedly bifurcated or rarely 3-6 times pinnate; lateral lobes 3-6 times bifurcated or rarely pinnate, 0.5-10.0 cm. long, ascending at an angle of 30-600, the ultimate divisions 0.5-12.0 mm. long, narrow, obtuse or acute, nerveless or very rarely nerved; petiole 1-8 cm. long, flattened, membranaceously widened at the base, with a distinct, sometimes very irregular ligule 2-3 mm. long and 5 mm. wide. Flowers solitary or in fascicles between the leaf bases; pedicel 1.0-1.5 cm. long, thickened into a disc at the tip; young spathe acute, 0.5-1.0 cm. long, the older tubular or infundibuliform, 0.5-1.0 cm. long; tepals 5-8, triangular, acute or acuminate, about 1 mm. long; stamens 5-8, 3.5-5.5 mm. long, the fila- ment lanceolate, scaphiform at the base, sometimes slightly united, 3-4 mm. long, the anthers obtuse, about 1 mm. long; pollen nearly globose, about 18 X 15 j, the lobes very wide at one pole and tapering toward the other; ovary ellipsoid, acute, base attenuate, flattened, distinctly 8-ribbed, 3.0-4.5 mm. long, 1.0-1.5 mm. wide; styles flattened or subulate, acute or emarginate, 1.0-2.5 mm. long. Fruit dehiscing with 2 equal, 5-ribbed valves.
