Pyrrosia christii is a choice epiphytic fern with long, upright, strappy leaves with diagonal veining emerging out from the central stem. Slowly forms an evergreen clump/colony.

Ferns thrive in neutral to acidic, loose, richly organic soil. Tongue Fern is excellent for mass plantings, rock gardens, containers, in woodlands and naturalized landscapes.

    Native to: Borneo

Pyrrosia christii is a really stunning epiphytic fern that grows slowly but well in the vivarium. The fronds appear fuzzy with short, fine hairs. In our experience, they reach up to 7 inches with long stems.

To get a cutting started, keep the rhizome in contact with a damp substrate like sphagnum moss, without covering the entire rhizome. Requires moderate to high humidity.

Pyrrosia christii | Frog and Frond

Pyrrosia christii is a fern native to the island of Borneo. It is found in the Malaysian states of Sarawak and Sabah, and in the Indonesian part of the island, Kalimantan. Pyrrosia christii is found mainly as an epiphyte, in a protected situation, restricted to perpetually humid areas, as seems to be confirmed by its fine and almost hairless fronds which are at first glance characteristic of a hygromorphic plant. However, it can occasionally be found on rocks in direct sunlight, an observation corroborated by the good resistance to drying of plants grown in greenhouses.

The rhizome, creeping and elongated, is covered by peltate scales, the base of which is entire to irregularly toothed, and the acumen light brown, ciliate. The distinctly stipitate fronds are moderately dimorphic. Sterile fronds have a stipe of equal length with the blade that reaches its maximum width in its lower part, or sometimes in its middle. The shape of the base of the blade varies from cuneate to more or less cordate and truncated, as for the apex, it varies from acute to acuminate. The fertile fronds, with a longer stem, are more elongated in shape, the base of the blade being cuneate and the apex obtuse to acuminate. The secondary veins are clearly visible, the tertiary veins forming regular areolas with included nervilles, simple or branched, frequently anastomosed. The very distinct hydathodes, superficial to slightly prominent, are distributed over the entire blade. The inducemently dimorphic is often fleeting, forming a thin and matte, hyaline layer, that is to say colorless and transparent like glass. The upper layer consists of pressed hairs, with rays arranged in a star shape, tightly applied against a lower layer composed of hairs with mostly woolly rays. The sores can be distributed over the entire blade, or be closely grouped into areas with more or less well-defined contours.

General Information and Care: Pyrrosia christii is another absolutely stunning epiphytic fern that does magnificently in terrarium conditions. This species is one of the larger ones that Glass Box Tropicals offers with fronds reaching up to 8" in length with the stem. However, if you can find an area to fit it into your tank, you will definitely be please with your choice. The fronds are this species are light green with dark green venation. Additionally, they have some brown pubescence around the leaf margin that really adds additional interest. This species also seems more prone to forming a mound instead of wandering around like some of the other rhizomatous species. To get the best growth, this species seems to love tree fern fiber plaques/mounts.
