Description
Vegetative traits
The fragrant orchid is a perennial herbaceous plant and reaches heights of between 20 and 50 centimetres. This geophyte forms two hand-shaped nodules as survival organs. The leaves are linear. The stem is thin, round and 1.3 to 2.2 millimetres thick below the inflorescence. It bears a brown scale leaf at the bottom. At the top, there are 3 to 4 rosetti-heaped, keeled basal leaves, which are 8 to 18 centimetres long and 2 to 7 millimetres wide. This is followed by several grass-like stem leaves. The uppermost one does not reach the inflorescence.
Generative characteristics
The flowering period lasts from June to August. The fragrant orchid is characterized by intensely vanilla-like scented flowers. The inflorescence is narrowly cylindrical, 4 to 11 centimetres long and loosely studded with 25 to 80 flowers. The hermaphroditic flowers are zygomorphic and three-counted. The petals are white to purple. The bracts are 5 to 11 millimeters long and as long or longer as the ovary. The lateral cuttlefish are horizontally protruding, 3.5 to 5.5 millimeters long and 2 to 3 millimeters wide. the middle sepal and petals form a helmet. The lip is three-lobed, 3.8 to 5 millimeters long and 3.4 to 5 millimeters wide and without markings. The horizontal to slightly downwardly curved spur is shorter than the ovary with a length of 4 to 6 millimetres. The ripe fruit capsules are bare and bear remnants of the flower at the end. They are 4.5 to 6 millimeters long and 3 to 4 millimeters thick.
The number of chromosomes is 2n = 40.
