섬잣나무 '후카이'-[정명] Pinus parviflora 'Fukai'

More commonly known as ‘Fukai’. A unique dwarf form that is rarely seen, this selection resembles ‘Ogon‘ and ‘Ogon janome,’ but we have found it to be more dwarf.  Its winter needles are golden yellow (similar to ‘Ogon’) and its new growth is banded with yellow variegation (similar to ‘Ogon janome,’ but not as long lasting). Mostly pale greenish-yellow, flush needles are golden.

A fascinating and rare Japanese White Pine adored for its form, structure and color, Pinus parviflora 'Fukai', also known as 'Shikoken', was discovered in a batch of seedlings in 1975 by Tage Lundell in Helsingborg, Sweden. Adding maybe 6 to 8 inches in size per year, it naturally forms an upright open pyramid with irregular horizontally reaching branches, providing that traditional Japanese garden look and feel. A true showpiece, its short, thick and wavy needles emerge a soft-blue-green with prominent bands of glowing creamy yellow. By winter the needles turn to a deeper golden yellow shining against deep blue-green. It reaches 7 to 9 feet tall and 5 to 6 feet wide over time with no pruning. That said, like most other pines, it can be candle pruned to keep a shorter, denser form. Either way, Fukai makes for a captivating specimen in garden beds or containers which can be situated on or around patios and other outdoor sitting spaces.

Pinus parviflora 'Fukai' has the typical shorter needles of Pinus parviflora, but it is a unique Japanese white pine. It has beautiful golden variegation in its darker green needles. This gives a good color contrast and makes 'Fukai' pop in the landscape. The structure of 'Fukai' is typically fairly open, while the irregular branches are filled with these colorful needles. This makes 'Fukai' great for traditional Japanese gardens or adding that same feel to your current garden. 'Fukai' may reach 4-6 ft in height by 3-4 ft in width in 10 years.
