Origin:
Collector not named; probably Dr A.L. Geyer. Latin 'amethystina' coloured amethyst or violet.
Distribution:
RSA: CP, in a relatively narrow strip extending eastwards from Kliprand. TL not specified; by inference 'Nuwe Fontein', i.e. Kliprand (C270)
Stone: Shale with calcrete and quartzite. Colours yellow-brown, grey-white, grey, brown, black.Description:
Similar to the type, but larger, generally with more open windows, and ofteen tinged with pink or amethyst.
Profile bicuneate; top surface convex, often ± humped and slightly lobsided; fissure deep, 10-20 mm, sometimes more widely open and deeper on one side than the other; lobes usually distinctly divergent.
Face somewhat elevated; mostly elongated elliptic; lobes equal-unequal; opaque + transluscent; smooth to slightly rugse.
Margins very slender lines, usually regular, occasionally slightly dentate; usually extended downwards at each end along the outer edges of the fissures and drawn to fine points.
Windows usually ± completely open, sometimes finely mottled.
Channels very narrow, irregular, indistinct.
Islands small, few to many, indistinct, in the form of faint fine mottling, sometimes resembling cobweb or slightly frosted glass.
Rubrications absent.
Dusky dots seldom visible, even with a lens.
Colours: Margins and islands various shades of opaque pale greenish, creamy or pinkish (amethyst) grey. Windows and channels various shades of transluscent pale greyish or bluish green or faintly pinkish grey, the more open windows often having a distinctly glassy appearance. Dusky dots dull greyish blue. Shoulders various shades of opaque pinkish (amethyst) or greenish grey, or greyish pink or green. Faces of fissures as for the shoulders.
Size: Small to medium, facial diameters up to 35 X 20 mm, mostly about 23 X 13 mm. Number of heads up to 7 or more, mostly 2-4.Flowers:
Yellow with white centre, very small to medium, up to 35 mm Ø, mostly 20-30 mm Ø.
Seed capsules mostly 5-merous (98%), otherwise 4- or 6-merous (2%). Profile boat-shaped, top flat. Face broadly elliptic to round, with hinge-rim, up to 9 X 7,5 mm, mostly about 6,5 X 6 mm.
