Begonia rufa differs from the other species studied by its densely hairy indumentum on the abaxial surface of the leaves and, mainly, on the margin of the tepals of female flowers. The lamina has three to five lobes arranged asymmetrically with each other.

Morphological characteristics of Begonia rufa, Begonia altamiroi and Begonia apparicioi. Of the three species, Begonia rufa is the best defined, however, this species is morphologically very variable, especially the shape of the leaf lobes and the indumentum. This wide variation of forms observed in this species may be related to its distribution and the habitats they occupy, however, there are overlaps and intermediate forms that are not constant to the point of allowing the recognition of infra-specific categories, which was then related to the phenotypic plasticity of the populations studied. In addition, as only the specimens from Minas Gerais were evaluated and as the materials of the type collection of the name in question were not analyzed, it was decided to treat the populations of Begonia rufa as a single species.
