Echinocereus triglochidiatus f. White Sands
Common Name(s): Black-Spine Claret-Cup, Claret-Cup, King's Crown Cactus, Robust Claret-Cup, Rose's Claret-Cup, Rose's Hedgehog, Spineless Hedgehog, White-Spined Claret-Cup
Synonym(s): Cereus gonacanthus, Echinocereus gonacanthus, Echinocereus triglochidiatus gonacanthusSubfamily: Cactoideae
Tribe: PachycereeaeDistribution: New Mexico - United States (North America)
Habit: CylindricalFlower: Orange, Red Encounterability: Rare Species Notes: The name "White Sands" as I've used it here is not an official designation for this or any plant. However, the population of this species at White Sands National Monument in New Mexico is physically distinct from other populations in terms of size. Individual stems in this population have been reported up to 6 feet in length and 6 inches in diameter. While it has been proposed that this trait is due strictly to environmental factors, this is false and growers have proved that seed-propagated plants from this strain retain their giant size in comparisson to other seed sources that are grown side-by-side under the same conditions. Debate continues as to whether or not this population qualifies to receive taxonomic recognition. The matter is complicated in that there are a number of other population throughout New Mexico that exibit a gradual progression from the typical stems that measure less than 12 inches up to the large White Sands Plants. Because of their reputation among growers and the interest to enthusiats, I have listed them here to showcase their beauty. This is something we should all be able to appreciate dispite the lack of any proper naming for this group.
