Puya × berteroniana is a natural hybrid in the genus Puya between the species Puya alpestris subsp. zoellneri × Puya venusta. This natural hybrid is endemic to Chile.

A revision of Puya found that it is likely a hybrid, given its rarity and intermediate characteristics between several species. Additionally, the name Puya berteroniana has been widely misapplied to plants of a different species, Puya alpestris.

P. alpestris- Puya alpestris is a species of bromeliad endemic to the Chilean Andes. It is native to dry hills, rock outcrops in central and southern Chile at elevations of 0 to 2200 meters. It is one of the most southerly occurring species within the family. It is one of the few Puya species that are grown in some parks and gardens as an ornamental plant. It is more commonly known as the Sapphire Tower.

Puya alpestris ssp. zoellneri is an evergreen perennial bromeliad with green foliage. In summer blue and orange flowers emerge. Features grassy texture. Does well in average, gritty and well-drained soil. A good option if you're seeking something heat tolerant and verticillium wilt resistant.

P. venusta

Puya venusta is a species of flowering plant in the family Bromeliaceae. This species is a rare plant endemic to certain areas of Chile including Punta Teatinos and Cerro La Campana. In La Campana National Park, P. venusta is associated with the endangered Chilean Wine Palm, Jubaea chilensis, a palm that prehistorically had a significantly wider distribution.
