Pyrola asarifolia subsp. incarnata is an evergreen perennial herb of the genus Pyrola asarifolia in the family Azaleaceae.
In the past, it was considered to be a family of Rhododendron plants, but all of the former Apiaceae are included in the family Azaleaceae in the new APG plant classification system.
Features
There are petioles 3-5 cm long on the leaves, the leaf blades are round or ovate-oval, 3-4.5 cm long and 2-3.5 cm wide. The tips of the leaves are round, the base is round or slightly heart-shaped, with inconspicuous fine serrations on the edges.
The flowering period is from June to early August. Flower stalks 15-25 cm long extend from between the leaves, and racemes are attached, with 8-15 flowers. Flower stalks are reddish, with 1-3 broad-lanceolate scaly lobes. The bracts are narrowly oblong, and the tips are abruptly short and pointed. The sepals are discrete in 5 pieces, narrowly ovate, the length is twice as wide as the width, 2-3 mm long and 1-1.5 mm wide. The flowers are pink to dark pink, have 5 petals, and are separated into a broad bell shape with a diameter of about 13 mm, and bloom downward. The peduncle is curved, 6-8 mm long, and the stigma is small and 5-lobed. The fruit is about 7 mm in diameter.
The species epithet asarifolia means "of leaves like mallow".
Distribution and growing conditions
In Japan, it is distributed north of Hokkaido and the central region of Honshu, and grows from mountainous areas to grasslands, shrub forests, and forest edges in the lower alpine zone. Unlike other species of the genus Ichthora, it often grows in clusters. In the world, it is distributed in Korea, northeastern China, Siberia, Kamchatka, and Alaska.
