Minuartia verna var. japonica is a perennial herb of the genus Lycaenaceae. Also known as Japanese clover. Alpine plants.

Features

Small perennial. The stems are stump-shaped, well branched, 4-13 cm high. The branches without flowers grow to 5-20 mm long, the leaves are needle-shaped, 5-7 mm long, and the tips are needle-shaped. The flowering branches are erect and have short and glandular hairs at the top. 2-3 pairs of leaves on flowering branches are sessile and paired, and the leaf blades are smaller than those on non-flowered branches.

The flowering period is from July to August. The flowers are about 5 mm in diameter and have two clustered inflorescences at the tip of the stem. The peduncle is densely covered with glandular hairs. The calyx is deciprocated, there are 5 sepals, the sepals are ovate to broad-lanceolate, 3 mm long, 3 veins, short hairs, and a sharp tip. The petals are white in 5 pieces, ovate to oval, almost the same length as the sepals, and have a full edge. Stamens have 10 pieces. There are 3 pistils. The fruit becomes a fruit, oblong, 4 mm long, 3-lobed. Seeds are renal round, grow to 0.6-0.7 mm in length, the seed processes are inconspicuous.

Distribution and growing conditions

Endemic to Japan. It is distributed north of Hokkaido and the central region of Honshu, and grows in rocky areas and gravel areas of the alpine zone.
